Charity site with recurring donation flow

A donation flow that stops losing people at step two

/ Overview

A charity was losing most would-be donors partway through a four-step donation form. We deployed a fundraising-focused WordPress base, cut the donation flow to two steps, added recurring giving, and made the whole site properly accessible.

Discuss a build like this

/ Project Details

Project: Charity site with recurring donation flow

Client: Under NDA — reference available on request

Industry: Non-profit & fundraising

Engagement: Deployment & customisation engagement

Built on: BigHearts (charity donation WordPress theme) by WebGeniusLab, licensed via ThemeForest

/ Challenge

Every additional field in a donation form costs donations, but charities have real compliance reasons for collecting donor information. The site also had to work for genuinely everyone — screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, older devices on slow connections.

/ Provided Services

Donation flow rebuild

Four steps reduced to two, with tax-receipt and Gift-Aid style details collected after payment rather than before. Suggested amounts and recurring giving surfaced as the default path.

Payments & campaigns

Payment gateway integration for one-off and recurring donations, campaign pages with live progress totals, and automated receipting with delivery logging.

Accessibility & performance

WCAG AA pass — contrast, focus order, keyboard navigation, screen-reader labelling — plus image and script optimisation for slow connections and older hardware.

/ Solution

We moved everything non-essential to a post-donation confirmation step, so donors give first and complete their details afterwards. Recurring giving was made the visually default option rather than an afterthought, and the entire site was rebuilt to WCAG AA.

/ Tech stack

WordPress

Campaign pages and stories are published by the charity's own communications team, so editorial independence mattered more than raw flexibility.

Donation & payment plugins

Recurring billing, receipting and campaign progress handled through established plugins rather than custom code, keeping long-term maintenance cheap.

Accessibility tooling

Automated auditing in the build pipeline plus manual screen-reader testing, because automated tools catch roughly a third of real issues.

/ Client's Feedback

They cut our donation form in half and we were nervous about it. Completed donations went up, and the recurring option is now most of our monthly income.
